​At Canterbury Lash Extensions, client health is my top priority. While the lash industry has gained a bad reputation for causing lash damage and reactions to products, the reality is that eyelash extensions are incredibly safe when applied by an expert using high-quality products. Unfortunately, the global lash industry is unregulated, meaning there is little control over product safety. Many lash products used in treatments are manufactured in the Far East due to low manufacturing costs and are then imported to the UK. Many lash artists assume that products sold in the UK are safe, but this is often not the case.

In 2014, just two years after I began my career in lash extensions, I fell seriously ill. My symptoms included extreme headaches, sinus pain, light sensitivity, a constant runny nose, black mucus, a chesty cough, cold-like symptoms, fatigue, and itchy skin on my face, neck, and chest. I started wearing a mask while lashing to reduce my symptoms, which helped slightly, but I was still unusually sick. It eventually became clear that the lash products, particularly the adhesives, were the cause of my illness. I had been unknowingly exposing myself to non-beauty grade, low-quality industrial-strength products that were harming my health and had become seriously allergic to the products. As you can see, it's not just clients that can become allergic to lashes, as a therapist we are exposed every day to our products and are therefore more prone to reactions if using unsafe products.

Most lash glues are rebranded super glue (an industrial product),which explains why so many clients and lash artists have adverse reactions to these non human grade adhesives/products. The lack of global regulation in the lash industry allows low-grade ingredients to be used in lash products and sold worldwide without consequences. This discovery led me to advocate for product safety and awareness in the lash industry. In 2014/2015 I developed my own super safe, cosmetic grade, toxicology tested lash products, which I sell within my lash brand Eyelash Excellence. I had to find a way to be able to lash again, so developing my own range was the only solution. In 2014/2015 I was one of the first lash brands in the world to produce UK made and approved lash liquids and adhesives. 10 years later on I am sad to say that the industry hasn't really changed, and I am only one of a select few lash suppliers that sell safe UK made products. For most lash suppliers it's profit over passion, so with no regulations they will continue to buy from the Far East and destroy the health of both lash artists and their clients.
